Former Brighton defender and ex-Hull City transfer target joins FC Volendam on two-year contract

FC Volendam have completed the signing of George Cox, who has signed a two-year contract at the Kras Stadion. The English left-back has returned to the Eredivisie following four successful seasons with Fortuna Sittard. Cox has spent the summer as a free agent, but following interest from several sides, the 25-year-old has finally found his new home.

Hull City and Blackburn Rovers were reportedly interested in signing George Cox in the summer. The talented defender has been a pivotal part of the Fortuna Sittard squad, and there’s no doubt that he could have fit into a Championship squad. Cox kicked off his career with Brighton & Hove Albion, where he featured 59 times for the U21s. He also experienced a loan spell with Northampton during the 18/19 season.

With Volendam, George Cox will fill the gap left by Derry John Murkin, who made a move to Schalke 04 during the summer. Cox will play alongside former Portsmouth defender Josh Flint, who joined Volendam in 2020. Speaking to the club website, Cox said ‘I am very excited about this project. I am going to give everything for the team and hope that we can get the best out of each other in the coming period.’ Volendam are currently bottom of the Eredivisie having lost al four of their games so far this season.
