Former Borussia Dortmund and Brentford defender departs FC Utrecht for loan spell with Vålerenga

Utrecht have confirmed that defender Kolbeinn Finnsson has been loaned to Norwegian side Vålerenga. The defender has joined the Oslo based side for the upcoming 2026 Eliteserien season. Finnsson, who is an Icelandic international, has had limited opportunities since joining Utrecht from Danish side Lyngby back in 2024.

Finnsson began his career in Iceland with Fylkir. After just 11 appearances for the senior side he was signed by Brentford, but never played a game for the Premier League side. Instead he was loaned back to Fylkir for the 2019 season, playing 15 games and scoring twice. In 2019 he joined the Borussia Dortmund set up. Finnsson never played a senior game for Borussia Dortmund either, but was present for the second team, making 7 appearances. In 2023 he moved to Lyngby on a free transfer. It was in Danish football that he finally got a run of games, playing 53 times for the side over a season and a half. In 2024 he joined Utrecht, but after eight appearances last season and only two so far this season, it was clearly time for Finnsson to move on.
