Former Aston Villa, Reading and Cardiff City midfielder Leandro Bacuna trains with FC Groningen following departure from Watford

FC Groningen welcomed back Leandro Bacuna into their training camp on Wednesday. The 31-year-old midfielder is currently a free agent following his departure from Watford last month. Bacuna has been given the chance to work on his fitness with his former club.

Leandro Bacuna went through the youth academy at Groningen and played for the club’s first team between 2010 and 2013. The Curaçao international played 126 matches for Groningen, scoring 17 goals and providing 14 assists. Then he left for Aston Villa, where he immediately became a regular first-team player and went on to spend five years at Villa Park between 2013 and 2017. Bacuna has 96 Premier League appearances to his name and 131 appearances with Aston Villa.

Bacuna has since played for Reading, Cardiff City and most recently Watford. Last season he featured 14 times in the Championship for the Hornets, as the club finished 11th in the table. Now, he’s back training with his boyhood club. He’ll continue to do so as he plots his next move.
