In a few months time, the suspension of Marc Overmars from football related activities is set to expire. He will return to his role as Sporting Director at Antwerp in November, having been out of action since January 2024. Het Nieuwsblad and others are reporting that the former Ajax man has extended his contract until 2027.
While this may seem to be as a compensation for his one year suspension, the club have stated that this is not the case. Rather, they state that this was agreed at the end of the 2022/2023 season, but was not communicated externally. Overmars will return to a club that is spending less than when he was allowed to be actively involved in football decisions. The club have had to sell a number of key players in order to balance the books, bringing in cheaper options to replace them. Overmars worked with Mark van Bommel to oversee a double winning season, yet the former midfielder has since left the club to be replaced by Jonas De Roeck.
