Feyenoord suffer first defeat of the season in 2-1 loss to Twente which sees Arne Slot’s side slip down the Eredivisie table

Feyenoord have suffered their first defeat of the Eredivisie season, losing 2-1 to FC Twente at De Grolsch Veste. Having just claimed an incredible 3-1 victory over Lazio in the Champions League, Arne Slot’s side looked like the favourites heading into this fixture. But, it was Joseph Oosting’s Twente team that took all three points.

Twente’s home form is unbelievable. The Enschede-based club haven’t lost an Eredivisie match at home since May 2022 and they were clearly determined to maintain that incredible run. Feyenoord struggled for chances in the first half, failing to register a single shot on target. Just 10 minutes into the clash it was 21-year-old Manfred Ugalde who opened the scoring for the hosts. A superb curling strike flew over Justin Bijlow in the Feyenoord goal.

Looks of frustration were etched onto the faces of every Feyenoord player in the second half as Twente continued to keep the visitors out. As the tension was turned up, the game began to get scrappy. Six yellow cards were shared between the two sides, including one for the angry Arne Slot. After 78 minutes of action, it was the experienced Ricky van Wolfswinkel who doubled Twente’s lead with a simple strike from close range.

In the 86th minute, Feyenoord pulled one back through Lutsharel Geertruida, but it simply wasn’t enough for the current Eredivisie champions. The league’s top scorer, Santiago Gimenez, failed to add to his tally of 13 goals this season and the rest of the squad were silenced by a determined Twente team. Feyenoord have slipped down to fourth place in the table, and Twente have overtaken them, taking third spot. The hosts play Utrecht away next weekend, whilst Feyenoord face Waalwijk in a match they’re expected to win.
