Feyenoord join Atlético Madrid and Benfica in race to sign Jonathan Varane, the younger brother of Manchester United’s Raphaël Varane

Feyenoord are interested in Jonathan Varane, according to AS. The 21-year-old midfielder currently plays in the Spanish second tier for Sporting Gijón, where he’s under contract until 2027. Jonathan Varane is the half-brother of Manchester United defender Raphaël Varane.

Jonathan Varane moved from RC Lens to Gijón in the summer of 2022. Last season the central midfielder featured 17 times in the Segunda División as Gijón finished in 17th place. The French talent provided two assists last season. Gijón have reportedly applied a €5m price tag on Varane, who is also in the interest of Atlético Madrid and Benfica. The Spanish side have already received two offers for the midfielder, who extended his contract with the club at the end of May.

Feyenoord are hoping to strengthen their squad after winning their 16th Eredivisie title. The Dutch giants have already added to their midfield, with Ramiz Zerrouki joining from FC Twente and Thomas van den Belt joining from PEC Zwolle. Head coach Arne Slot also has Mats Wieffer and Quinten Timber as centre midfielders in his squad. Jonathan Varane would add extra youth and competitions to the squad, but first, Feyenoord will need to win the race for the French talent.
