Feyenoord agree deal to sign FC Twente defender and former Rangers transfer target

According to Voetbal International, Gijs Smal is set to become Feyenoord’s first acquisition heading into the new season, after the current Eredivisie champions agreed a deal with Twente to sign the Dutch defender. Smal has spent the last three seasons at Twente, where’s he has quickly become a standout star in the top flight, helping the side from Enschede reach the Europa Conference League qualifiers on two occasions.

In Enschede, Gijs Smal has featured 113 times since making the move from FC Volendam in 2020. Last season, the left-back racked up 10 assists and two goals in 34 appearances as Twente finished fifth in the table. Currently, they’re fifth in the table, but Smal is set to make the move to Feyenoord, who occupy second place. Twente wanted to keep Smal, but the 26-year-old opted against signing a new deal.

Scottish Premiership giants Rangers were reportedly interested in Smal during the winter. The club, currently managed by Belgian boss Philippe Clement, were keeping tabs on Gijs Smal but in the end, they decided not to make a move. Smal will wear a Feyenoord shirt from the start of next season following his free transfer.
