Fenerbahçe want to hijack Ajax’s move for West Ham workhorse

Fenerbahçe want to thwart Ajax’s attempts to bring back Edson Álvarez. The Turkish club has opened talks to sign the 27-year-old Mexican from West Ham United, reports Fabrizio Romano.

Following news of Ajax’s interest in the Premier League midfielder, Fenerbahçe and two other European clubs have now also approached the defensive midfielder, Romano reports. In Istanbul, manager José Mourinho is a strong proponent of his arrival. Álvarez is currently exploring his options, but hasn’t made a decision yet, the transfer expert claims.

Voetbal International reported on Friday that Ajax are working on signing Álvarez. However, the Amsterdam club must first sell players, complicating a deal for the Mexican international. Moreover, his six-million-euro salary is a significant commitment.

Álvarez’s arrival was described by VI on Monday morning as “difficult, but far from off the table.” Now, however, Ajax appears to be having to fend off interest from other European clubs, led by Fenerbahçe.
