Fears mounting that crowd trouble could disrupt Beerschot’s derby clash with Antwerp

This Sunday Beerschot will face Antwerp in the Belgian Pro League for the first time in three seasons. While the derby clash is always a heated affair, there are mounting fears that this weekends edition may not last the full 90 minutes. Members of Beerschot’s fan base have already stated that, should the side not perform well this weekend, then they may take action to ensure that the match does not finish.

Clearly the fans of the side are frustrated. After eight games, the side have picked up just one point. Having won the second tier last season, there was hope that they could then push on this year to establish themselves as a top flight club. However, a summer of turmoil off the pitch saw sporadic recruitment which has resulted in this terrible start to the season. Furthermore, the status of head coach Dirk Kuyt seems untouchable for financial reasons. It was revealed that the former Anfield favourite would have to be paid for the full remainder of his two year contract if he was sacked. Furthermore, that clause also applies to the rest of his staff.

The most recent meeting between the two sides was March 2022, with Antwerp winning 2-1 at home.
