FC Utrecht set to sign Mats Seuntjens from RKC Waalwijk

According to Brabants Dagblad, FC Utrecht are set to sign Mats Seuntjens on a free transfer from RKC Waalwijk. The 31-year-old attacker is said to have verbally agreed a two-year contract with Utrecht.

Seuntjens started the season as a Fortuna Sittard player, but in January he made the move to Waalwijk. 2023 has been an incredible year so far for the centre-forward, seeing as he’s scored four times and provided eight assists in just 17 appearances for Waalwijk. In total the former AZ Alkmaar attacker has nine assists to his name this season. Remarkably, only Dusan Tadic (Ajax), Cody Gakpo (PSV) and Vito van Crooij (Sparta Rotterdam) have more assists than Mats Seuntjens in the Eredivisie this season.

Seuntjens’ superb performances have helped guide Waalwijk to 8th place in the Eredivisie. Joseph Oosting’s side are seven points away from achieving their joint-highest-ever Eredivisie finish (7th) with three games remaining.

Next season looks like it could be tough for Waalwijk. In early April it was announced that manager Joseph Oosting would be moving to FC Twente at the end of the season, and they’ve recently lost right-back Saïd Bakari to Sparta Rotterdam. Midfielder Pelle Clement will also join Sparta on a free transfer at the end of the season. Now one of their most creative players, Mats Seuntjens looks to be on his way out.

As for FC Utrecht, they’re currently 7th in the league and could lose two strikers in the summer. 33-year-old Bas Dost is set to leave at the end of the season, and joint top scorer in the league, Tasos Douvikas has attracted interest from several foreign clubs. Mats Seuntjens on a free transfer could turn out to be a sensational signing for Utrecht.
