FC Twente expect defensive stalwart to leave this summer

FC Twente are strongly considering a summer departure for Mees Hilgers. Technical director Jan Streuer is reportedly aware of international interest in the defender.

The 24-year-old Hilgers has only one year left on his contract in Enschede and apparently has no intention of extending it.

โ€œMees has already indicated several times that he wants to take the next step, and weโ€™ve already acted on that in the transfer market,โ€ says Streuer, referring to the signing of Israeli Stav Lemkin who joined from Maccabi Tel Aviv.

โ€œYou can wait until a player leaves, but then it might already be mid-August,โ€ Streuer explained the strategy to VI. โ€œIf Mees does stay, weโ€™ll have an extra player at the back. But Iโ€™m not counting on that. We also know heโ€™s on the radar of foreign clubs. There havenโ€™t been any bids yet, but itโ€™s still quite early. A lot is going to happen this summer.โ€
