FC Groningen grab third summer signing with SC Cambuur youngster

As per Voetbal International, FC Groningen’s search for a new right-back is over as Tyrique Mercera (21) joins from SC Cambuur.

FC Groningen had reportedly been working on Mercera’s arrival for some time and reached an agreement with Cambuur this week. The northern club will pay a substantial buyout fee of over half a million euros, plus bonuses.

Mercera has already passed his medical in Groningen and the transfer is expected to be completed later today (Thursday). ‘The Pride of the North’ had been searching for a new right-back for about a year and a half. In January, Groningen were busy trying to sign Dirk Abels, but that transfer fell through. Incidentally, Mercera was being mentioned by the green-and-whites at the time.

Last season, Mercera was a regular starter for SC Cambuur, missing only one league match. He also plays for Curaçao and was in Dick Advocaat’s squad for the recent Gold Cup tournament.

Mercera becomes FC Groningen’s third summer signing, following Younes Taha (on loan for a year from FC Twente) and Oskar Zawada (from RKC Waalwijk). It’s known in the Dutch press that the 13th-placed side from last season’s Eredivisie are is still looking for a central defender and a defensive midfielder.
