Excelsior secure another season in the Eredivisie with 3-0 win over Fortuna Sittard

Excelsior Rotterdam have secured another season of Eredivisie football thanks to a superb 3-0 victory over Fortuna Sittard. Marinus Dijkhuizen’s side have spent recent weeks under the threat of relegation, but a perfect performance on Sunday secured their top-flight status.

After a tight first half of football at the Van Donge & De Roo Stadion, it was Kik Pierie who opened the scoring. The Dutch defender who has spent the season on loan from Ajax, headed in Marouan Azarkan’s cross to make it 1-0. Couhaib Driouech doubled the score line 15 minutes later, and Kenzo Goudmijn (picture marking Dusan Tadic) added the third with six minutes left to play. The three points gave Excelsior the safety they’ve been searching for.

Last season Excelsior were promoted from the Eerste Divisie via the playoffs. The club have spent three of the last five seasons in the second tier, but now they can relax with one game remaining. Excelsior take on FC Volendam next weekend on the final day of the season.
