Edwin van der Sar feels Ajax fans have become ‘spoiled’

Ajax director Edwin van der Sar feels that the fans of the club have become “spoiled” due to the successes of recent years.

The mood surrounding the club is currently more negative than it’s been for a long time with many fans unhappy with the job new manager Alfred Schreuder is doing.

Since taking over, he has led the team to two heavy defeats against Napoli, further losses to PSV, AZ and Liverpool and a draw at home to Go Ahead Eagles.

While Van der Sar hoped things would go better though, he feels supporters have become “spoiled” due to the success the club has recently enjoyed in Europe and that their expectations are unrealistically high.

“That is indeed the tricky thing. Everyone has become spoiled,” he told VI.

“You have ambition, you want that too, but against clubs with a budget of €800m, who drop the lesser players every year and get better players, the challenge is sometimes too great.

“At Dutch clubs, the better players always leave, so then you end up in a process of rebuilding again. And the following year often again. It is clever what we have done, and now we come back into a period where we want to develop like that again.”
