Drama for Belgium as Thibaut Courtois allegedly leaves over Romelu Lukaku captaincy decision

Belgium will face Estonia in a European Championship qualifier without their number one goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. The Real Madrid shot stopper did not turn up for training. Sporza are reporting that the reason for Courtois absence is that he felt disrespected when Romelu Lukaku was given the captains armband against Austria over him. With regular captain Kevin De Bruyne out injured, Domenico Tedesco’s rotation of the vice-captaincy meant that the Chelsea striker was given the armband over Courtois.

Allgedgely, the goalkeeper had asked Tedesco to announce that his absence was due to an injury. However, reports suggest that the newly appointed head coach is unlikely to go down that route. It now remains to be seen whether or not Tedesco will look to mend bridges with Courtois, or look elsewhere for a goalkeeper.

In his place will be one of Matz Sels, Thomas Kaminski or Arnaud Bodart. Only Selz has played for the Red Devils before, meaning that we could see a debut for one of the other contenders. Belgium drew 1-1 with Austria in their last match.
