Donny van de Beek provides injury update following ruptured Achilles

Donny van de Beek suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon against Athletic Bilbao in late September. The Girona midfielder recently spoke about his injury and successful surgery, and is now recovering in Amsterdam.

Van de Beek explained his injury to Rondo. โ€œUnfortunately, yes. I was just on my way back. Itโ€™s an injury thatโ€™s been bothering me quite a bit these past few years. I thought it was completely fine now. But in the match against Bilbao, I made a completely normal move, not even a wrong move, but I felt like someone stepped on my heel. I looked at the referee because I thought it was a foul. But there was absolutely no one around, so thatโ€™s never good.

โ€œItโ€™s incredibly frustrating and mentally challenging. Iโ€™d only just returned, and the coach immediately put me in the starting lineup, which was obviously a good sign. So this is incredibly frustrating.โ€ Van de Beek opted to return to his home in Amsterdam for the first few months of his rehabilitation. โ€œItโ€™s a different environment. Itโ€™s difficult to watch the other players prepare for a match while youโ€™re in the gym.โ€

Considering the circumstances, the 19-cap Dutch international is doing well. โ€œThe surgery went well. The doctors also say Iโ€™ll never have any problems again. It just takes a long time to get back. They always say at least six months if you tear your Achilles tendon. The stitches are already out, so things are looking up.โ€
