Dick Advocaat believes that Memphis Depay is actively choosing not to play for Barcelona to ensure he’s fit for the World Cup.
Memphis hasn’t played since picking up an injury in the last international break just over a month ago, and with the World Cup less than three weeks away, some are beginning to worry that he won’t be fully fit for it.
However, Advocaat doesn’t think there’s anything to worry about, suggesting that it’s the forward choice that he isn’t playing for his club, rather than fitness issues.
“I think he is just doing this consciously,” the former Oranje manager said on Ziggo.
“I think he just wants to be really fit when he comes into the Dutch national team soon. He’s not going to make it at Barça anyway, so he’s not taking a risk.”
It is true that Memphis doesn’t seem to have much of a future at Barcelona, with the club apparently keen on selling him in January.
