Frenkie de Jong not a fan of Barcelonaโ€™s game in Miami

Frenkie de Jong has commented on the plan to play Decemberโ€™s match between Villarreal and Barcelona in Miami. Like many other players, the Oranje international isnโ€™t enthusiastic about the UEFA-approved proposal.

โ€œNo, I donโ€™t like that,โ€ De Jong said at the Dutch national teamโ€™s press conference ahead of the World Cup qualifier against Malta. โ€œI can understand the clubs. Financially, theyโ€™ll obviously benefit from it, and they can further expand their brand worldwide. But I wouldnโ€™t do it.โ€

According to De Jong, the players themselves arenโ€™t being listened to. โ€œI donโ€™t think so, because itโ€™s just going ahead. Itโ€™s not good for the players. You have to travel a lot, and itโ€™s not fair in terms of competition. For us, itโ€™s an away game on neutral ground. I understand if other clubs arenโ€™t happy about that.โ€

National coach Ronald Koeman agrees with the Barcelona midfielder. โ€œItโ€™s completely absurd, of course. Frenkie gives a very good answer. There are now more Barcelona fans in the stands in Miami than Villarreal fans, even though it would normally have been a home game for Villarreal. Thatโ€™s not fair. Itโ€™s not good sportsmanship.โ€
