Cody Gakpo urged to make PSV Eredivisie champions before big transfer move

Netherlands’ 2022 World Cup top scorer Cody Gakpo has been urged by two PSV Eindhoven legends to stay at the club to secure the Eredivisie title before heading abroad, Omroep Brabant reports.

Legends Willy and René van de Kerkhof spoke to the state broadcaster on their thoughts of the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup so far and paid special attention to Gakpo who has been linked with a big money move to some of Europe’s elite.

While talking on their own podcast, the brothers were in agreement that Gakpo should ignore the transfer speculation in January and focus on bringing Champions League football back to the Philips Stadion with a clear message: “First make PSV champion and only go abroad from the summer.”

Real Madrid, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal have all been linked with the forward – who has scored three goals for Oranje at this winter’s international tournament and is top scorer in the Eredivisie with nine goals. In the summer, he was linked to Premier League clubs Southampton, Leeds United and Nottingham Forest for a fraction of the price he has been linked with now.

Former technical director John de Jong left the club in September with reports stating he was willing to explore the possibility of selling PSV’s star player with a big money move.

“PSV should be grateful to John de Jong,” René said. “The board should think again about that.

“But PSV should not let him go now,” says Willy. René couldn’t agree more. “He should first get PSV the title and Champions League football. That also brings in millions more. After that, let him pick a new club in his easy chair.”
