Cody Gakpo not interested in joining Leeds, Real Madrid move possible

Due to his excellent start to the season, Cody Gakpo has his sights set on joining a bigger club than Leeds, with Real Madrid a possible destination.

Gakpo almost left PSV for Leeds on the final day of the transfer window, with terms being agreed, but he ultimately opted to remain at the Dutch club until after the World Cup.

Since then, he has been in stunning form, getting 13 goals and 10 assists in 16 matches at club level; Erling Haaland is the only player in Europe’s top divisions that has as many goal contributions.

What’s more, he now looks set to start for the Netherlands at the World Cup after impressing as a number 10 in the international break just gone.

As a result of how well things are going for him, he now wants to join a bigger club than Leeds, according to David Ornstein of the Athletic, and one possible destination is Real Madrid.

“There was a sense around the talks that Gakpo might warm to the idea having previously shown reluctance, but the forward’s superb form at club and international level is believed to have shifted his expectations and Leeds have been made aware that currently he is not in favour of the switch,” Ornstein wrote.

“…the persistent rise has encouraged him to target a winter move to one of the game’s leading sides.

Sources with knowledge of the situation have mentioned Real Madrid as a potential destination for Gakpo, while he was considered by Manchester United before they opted to acquire Antony from Ajax. Arsenal are among others who have also been linked with the PSV academy product.
