Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay World Cup performances singled out by Jurgen Klinsmann

Dutch players Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay have been singled out by World Cup winner Jurgen Klinsmann for their contribution to Oranje’s World Cup campaign so far, NOS reports.

PSV Eindhoven’s Gakpo has been a key player for the Netherlands in the tournament so far featuring in every game and picking up three goals along the way. His form means he is in the running for the Golden Boot and just two goals behind France’s Kylian Mbappe. Meanwhile, Memphis Depay – who was Oranje’s top scorer in the qualifying round with 12 goals – appears to have completed shrugged off his hamstring injury.

Despite Depay’s limited involvement in the early rounds in the group stage, Klinsmann believe his contribution has been the difference going forward for the Dutch national side.

Speaking during a FIFA press event, the former USA head coach discussed the mindset coaches go through during the World Cup: “Are we going more forward or backwards? Do we want the ball more or less? We can talk about that for hours, here or in the pub.”

“We Germans took the most shots on goal, but have already gone home. Because we don’t have Memphis Depay or Cody Gakpo to shoot the ball in.”
