Charleroi’s Rik De Mil on the shortlist to replace Wouter Vrancken at Gent

LDH are reporting that Rik De Mil is one of the names on the Gent shortlist for the vacant head coaching role. The Charleroi head coach is just one of a number of names that the Buffaloes are considering to replace Wouter Vrancken, who was sacked on Monday. His last game in charge should have been against De Mil’s Charleroi side, but Vrancken was absent from the dugout.

Charleroi, understandably, are not interested in allowing De Mil to leave the club. Despite not having a reliable goal scorer, the head coach has guided the side to seventh place and in with a real chance of making the top six. This came after a run of eight games without a win and some pressure coming onto De Mil. Yet a few months later, a top six football and potential European football has become a real possibility. That would be a remarkable achievement for a side that were in the bottom four and fighting against relegation last season. De Mil is building a strong reputation in Belgian football as someone who plays attractive football and works well with young players.

No other names have yet to be leaked from the list asides from De Mil. While Gent would love to bring in someone like a De Mil, how feasible that will be remains to be seen. Charleroi would ask for a heft compensation package to see their head coach join a rival for the top six.
