Cercle Brugge and Standard Liege draw 0-0 to give Gent further play-off boost

Cercle Brugge and Standard Liege could not be separated at the Jan Breydel stadium in Brugge this afternoon. Despite managing 14 shots overall, Cercle only got two on target as they were unable to find a breakthrough. For Standard, they only tested Cercle goalkeeper Radoslaw Majecki once with their six attempts on goal. Both defences were putting their bodies on the line as they looked to gain advantage in the opening game of the play-off two campaign.

After Gent’s 3-1 win over Westerlo on Friday night, Standard were looking to grab three points to go level with the Buffaloes. For Cercle, they could have closed within three points of Gent, who they will face back to back after they play Westerlo next week. Now, Cercle will need to beat Westerlo for the first time this season, having lost 2-0 back in July and then 1-0 at home at the start of January.

For Standard, they are two points off Gent and can go ahead of the Buffaloes next Saturday evening if they beat them in Liege. The sides have drawn both of their previous games, with the most recent being a 0-0 draw in Gent. This would certainly suit Gent, who would fancy their chances to beat both Cercle and then Westerlo again.
