Casper Nielsen’s double dents Antwerp’s title hopes

Club Brugge put a dent in Antwerp’s title hopes with a 2-0 win at home this afternoon. Danish midfielder Casper Neilsen came off the bench at half-time to score two goals in just over 10 minutes to give the side their first win in the play-offs. After their dramatic defeat to Antwerp last weekend, Club Brugge were officially out of title contention. Now, they have given Nielsen’s former side Union St Gilloise a chance to take pole position.

After a 0-0 first half, Club Brugge head coach Rik De Mil took off Clinton Mata and brought on Nielsen. His decision was a good one as in the 51st minute Bjorn Meijer assisted the opening goal of the game. In the 62nd, another substitute in Romeo Vermant grabbed an assist as he provided for Nielsen to double the lead.

Club Brugge remain bottom of the group with 33 points, and are now just playing party spoiler over the next two games. They face Genk next before finishing off against Union on the 4th of June. All eyes will certainly be on the game between Union and Antwerp next weekend.
