Calls grow for Louis van Gaal to take Xavi Simons to the World Cup

Calls for Louis van Gaal to take Xavi Simons to the World Cup are growing, with a number of former Netherlands internationals calling for him to be in the squad.

Simons has been immensely impressive since joining PSV at the start of the season, getting eight goals and three assists in 10 Eredivisie matches.

At just 19 years of age, he’s establishing himself as one of the most exciting Dutch talents around, and is already good enough to play for Oranje in the eyes of many.

Indeed, Johan Boskamp would take him to the World Cup if he were manager.

“He can really play football well, that guy,” he said on Veronica Offside.

“He thinks much faster than other players. That is really not normal. You can really see that he has trained with great players. Really fantastic.”

Wim Kieft agrees, saying the player should be selected for his creative abilities.

“Simons really is a very good player,” he said.

“And when you make a selection like that, you always start looking at: can I bring one or two who can make something?”
