Boost for Club Brugge as young Dutch defender returns to training after six month absence

Club Brugge welcomed back Bjorn Meijer to training for the first time in six months. The club themselves announced on social media that the 21-year-old completed a full training session with the first team on Thursday. In his absence, he has seen the likes of Joaquin Seys play exceptionally well, while Maxim De Cuyper has made the left-back spot his own. There was always a question as to how the side would be able to fit the talented Meijer and De Cuyper in the same starting XI. For much of last season, the latter played at right-back but it was clearly not a comfortable position for him. When Meijer got injured, the question was put to one side.

Now, with Seys impressing, how Meijer will be able to break back into the side remains to be seen. The 21-year-old Dutch left-back joined the side in the summer of 2023 from FC Groningen. He had made 27 appearances for the Dutch side, scoring twice. Since joining he has played 87 times for the Belgian champions, scoring six goals. While he has at times been used as a central defender in a back three, he has not looked overly comfortable in this position.
