Blow for KV Mechelen as Rob Schoofs could be suspended for three weeks

KV Mechelen were dealt a blow when the Belgian FA recommended a three week ban for their captain Rob Schoofs. The midfielder was sent off during their Sunday fixture against Charleroi. Malinwa were 2-0 up at the time of Schoofs red, with the game finishing 2-2 thanks to two quickfire goals from Adem Zorgane.

If the suspension is upheld, Schoofs will miss Mechelen’s upcoming games against Eupen, Genk and RFC Seraing. Two of those are crucial in their battle to avoid the drop. The side are currently just six points above the drop zone, with Eupen currently one spot below them.

Schoofs has played 28 games in all competitions for Mechelen this season, scoring six goals and providing four assists. The 28-year-old joined the club from Sint-Truiden in the winter of 2016.

Despite their relegation battle, the side are also through to the semi-finals of the Belgian cup. They won their first leg against Zulte Waregem 2-1, with the home tie to be played on the 28th of February.
