Blow for Belgium as Thibault Courtois decides against playing in EURO 2024

Radio Marca are reporting that Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibault Courtois has decided not to play at EURO 2024 for Belgium next summer. The report suggests that the former Genk and Chelsea keeper would rather spend the summer continuing to rehabilitate. Following an argument with Belgium’s head coach Domenico Tedesco, there were already question marks around his involvement in the tournament in Germany. Courtois has been capped 102 times by the Belgian national team since making his debut in 2011.

Belgium have been alternating between Strasbourg goalkeeper Matz Sels and 31-year-old Wolfsburg shot stopper Koen Casteels. These two may well be now vying to be the number one for the Red Devils during the tournament next summer. Belgium are set to face Romania and Slovakia in Group E, with their final group stage opponent yet to be finalised. Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Israel and Ukraine are set to battle it out for the final spot in the group.
