Benfica’s Jan Vertonghen “not an option” for Club Brugge

Jan Vertonghen wants to leave Benfica this summer, but joining Club Brugge isn’t currently an option for him.

After being an important player for the Portuguese side in his first two years there, Vertonghen has dropped to the bench this season with new manager Roger Schmidt preferring other options.

As a result, he’s keen to leave the club to ensure that he gets playing time and is match fit for the World Cup this winter.

Sacha Tavolieri has reported that Club Brugge want to sign him and have already entered talks with Benfica, intending to offer him an initial two-year contract.

However, Het Laatste Nieuws have now stated that, for whatever reason, the 139-time Belgium international is “not an option” for the Pro League club.

It has been rumoured that English clubs are interested in securing his services, and that would be a more likely move for him given they player at a higher level and would be able to offer more money.
