Belgium debutant Zeno Debast admits being starstruck by Kevin de Bruyne

Being in the Belgium squad for the first time, Zeno Debast has admitted that he’s starstruck by Kevin de Bruyne.

Debast, just 18 years of age, was called up by Roberto Martinez for the first time for the upcoming Nations League matches after making a strong start to the season at Anderlecht.

He’s trained with the senior national team before, but after arriving at the camp as a member of the squad for the first time, he admitted to being starstruck by the likes of De Bruyne.

“In June I had already trained with the national team for a few days, so I already knew a few guests,” he told Het Laatste Nieuws.

“It was very nice to see everyone again. Am I still starstruck when I see players like De Bruyne? Yes of course. It’s adapting. I know them mainly from television, now I play with them.”

He says having Anderlecht team-mate Jan Vertonghen there is helpful for him, and is just aiming to enjoy the experience and learn from it.

“I’m lucky to have Jan, [who I] now know well from Anderlecht,” he added.

I also had a conversation with the national coach. He told me to learn a lot and enjoy this week. I dream of a few minutes of play. But I’m mainly here to learn. Everything else is bonus.

“The World Cup? Of course, I dream of that too.”
