Belgian Pro League Matchweek 10 Review

On the eve of another international break, matchweek 10 in the Belgian Pro League saw a clash of the two title favourites on Sunday afternoon, while at the other end of the table the gap to the bottom side Dender is beginning to grow.

Friday night action: Gent continue to hit form

Friday night saw Gent continue their good run of form with a home win over Charleroi. The Buffaloes took the lead throw a deflected Atsuki Ito strike before being pegged back by a fantastic Patrick Pflucke free-kick. However, the Gent resurgence continued as Omri Gandelman struck in the 70th minute. The ever reliable Israeli international converted another Michal Skoras assist to earn Gent all three points.

Saturdayโ€™s action: Canaries bounce back amid draw fest

Sint Truiden returned to winning ways with a 3-1 away win over KV Mechelen. The Canaries were 1-0 down going into the 70th minute after an own goal from Shogo Taniguchi. Andres Ferrari missed a penalty just before half-time, meaning Arbnor Muja took the second penalty the side won to make it 1-1. Late on, Keisuke Goto and Ferrari struck to earn Sint Truiden a 3-1 win.

RAAL La Louviere drew 0-0 for the second week running as they failed to score against fellow newly promoted side Zulte Waregem. Both sides have now gone four games without defeat as they settle into life in the Pro League. Both goalkeepers were busy, although RAAL were the more threatening of the two sides.

Antwerpโ€™s poor form continued with a 1-1 draw against a Cercle Brugge side struggling for some consistency. Midfielder Mauricio Benitez gave the Great Old the lead just before the half-our mark, only for Oumar Diakite to draw Cercle level just before the break. Neither side has won in their last five games now.

Sundayโ€™s action: Classico victory for Anderlecht and Club Brugge get revenge

Anderlecht beat Standard Liege on Sunday to win the Belgian Pro Leagueโ€™s Classico. A solitary goal from summer signing Mihajlo Cvetkovic was enough for the hosts, with the Serbian teenager netting his first senior goal for the first team. Ibrahim Karamoko thought he had equalised, only for the goal to be ruled out for a foul. the defenderโ€™s day got even worse when he was sent off late on.

Dender remain winless in 10 games as they suffered a 2-1 defeat away to Genk. The bottom of the table side did take the lead through Bruny Nismba, before Genk captain Bryan Heynen scored on half-time to bring the home side level. Malcolm Viltard had been booked just before the end of the opening 45 minutes and he was walking back down the tunnel in the 55th minute after picking up a second yellow. Genk finally made their numerical advantage count through Ken Nkuba in the 83rd minute. David Toshevski was then sent off for Dender late on to add insult to injury.

Club Brugge were the first team to beat Union St Gilloise this season thanks to a solitary goal from Carlos Forbs. The strike in the 77th minute was enough for the home side to win a game in which they had the better of the chances. Kjell Scherpen had pulled off a few decent saves but will feel like he should have done better with the strike from Forbs that won the game.

OH Leuven made it three games without a win when they lost 2-0 away to Westerlo on Sunday evening. Nacho Ferri took advantage of some poor defending from the away side to give Westerlo the lead. Adedire Mebude made it 2-0 in the77th minute with a well taken goal to ensure Westerlo ended a run of three matches without a win.
