Match week eight in the Belgian Pro League saw Genk continue their fine form, while Beerschot made it eight games without a win. However, reports in Belgium are suggesting that Kuyt us unlikely to be let go ahead of the derby with Antwerp next weekend.
Standard Liege 0-0 Union St Gilloise
The least surprising result of the weekend. Neither side has been able to get things going in attack, while Standard have been the best side defensively in the Pro League this season. Union had the most chances and possession, but Standard’s young goalkeeping star Matthieu Epolo continued to impress between the posts for the side.
Beerschot 0-3 Sint Truiden
Felice Mazzu grabbed his second win since joining the Canaries, extending the sides unbeaten run to four games now. Beerschot, as we mentioned, have now lost seven in a row. It could have been more than three had it not been for Beerschot’s young goalkeeper Nick Shinton. Bilal Brahimi looks a great pick up for Sint Truiden, but it was a solid all around performance from the side.
Westerlo 1-2 Antwerp
It wsa the Toby Alderweireld show in Westerlo this Saturday. The veteran defender scored twice, with his second coming in the 95th minute. Matija Frigan grabbed the goal for Westerlo, making up for his penalty miss earlier in the first half. Westerlo have now not won four five games, while Antwerp are three unbeaten. They will hope to make this four when they face rivals Beerschot at the weekend.
Anderlecht 0-0 Charleroi
Brian Riemer was sacked during the week, but this made little difference to the sides performance at the weekend. They once again struggled to put away Charleroi, with goalkeeper colin Coosemans and Mohamed Kone playing well for their respective sides. For Charleroi, this season has already started far better than the previous two, with them sitting fifth level on points with Anderlecht who have dropped to sixth.
Club Brugge 2-4 Gent
One of the biggest surprises of the weekend, Gent won the Flanders derby despite Club having a plethora of chances. The home side had 27 shots but were denied by Davy Roef. Omri Gandelman scored twice, while Max Dean finished well in the first half. Poor Joel Ordonez also scored an own goal for Club Brugge. Andreas Skov Olsen and Gustaf Nilsson’s goals were unable to help Club comeback in this game. Gent have gone four unbeaten now, while for Club this was their third defeat of the season.
KV Mechelen 2-0 Cercle Brugge
Cercle’s poor start to the season continued as they were beaten by Mechelen, with Daam Foulon scoring and then having to go off injured after colliding with goalkeeper Warleson. Cercle struggled to create much going forward, while Mechelen were wasteful with their chances. Bas van den Eynden did eventually grab the second goal to keep Cercle second bottom in the table.
Genk 4-0 Dender
Genk were dominant as they kept their winning run going over newly promoted Dender. The away side started Julien Devriendt in goal, the third different keeper they have used this season. He made nine saves in total, but also spent some time picking the ball out of his net. Tolu grabbed another goal for the season, while Christopher Bonsu Baah made it two. Patrick Hrosovsky scored with his first touch of the game after coming on, before Hyun-Gyu Oh scored the pick of the goals with a venomous strike late on.
OH Leuven 1-1 Kortrijk
OH Leuven’s lack of killer instinct once again reared its frustrating head on Sunday evening. The home side had 15 shots but only managed to make one count. Kortrijk were sub par and were fortunate to go ahead when Dion De Neve’s strike deflected in. Konan N’Dri’s equaliser was almost immediate and well taken, giving him two for the season. Once again, the best player for the home side was midfielder Birger Verstraete, who provided the assist. OHL have now drawn five of their eight games this season.
