Belgian FA looking to extend Roberto Martinez contract beyond 2022 World Cup

Many expected that the 2022 World Cup would be the final tournament for Red Devils head coach Roberto Martinez. However, Het Nieuwsblad have revealed that talks between the Spaniard and the Belgian FA to extend his contract beyond the 31st December 2022 expiry date are ongoing.

Martinez took charge of what many believe to be Belgium’s golden generation in 2016, with the highlight of his reign so far being a third place finish at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. This tournament is certainly the last for many of that golden generation, and it was believed that the coach would follow them. However, it appears Martinez time with the Red Devils will be extended. The former Wigan and Everton manager is not just the head coach, but is also the Nations technical director.

Belgium will face Morocco, Croatia and Canada in Group F of the 2022 World Cup. Martinez is facing a selection headache with the countries record scorer Romelu Lukaku in danger of not making the final squad.
