Barcelona’s Memphis Depay linked with move to Newcastle United

Barcelona are keen to facilitate a move for Memphis Depay to leave the Nou Camp permanently with Newcastle United thought to be interested, Voetbal International reports.

Xavi is expected to have a quiet winter transfer window in terms of recruits with La Liga’s financial situation but are looking at a number of possible departures to balance the books with Depay’s name cropping up.

The former Manchester United has been linked with a return to the Premier League with a possible second stint at Old Trafford under Erik ten Hag having had a mediocre spell in Lancashire back when Louis van Gaal was at the helm.

The 28-year-old winger’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season and Barca are thought to be exploring the option of cashing in on the Dutch player instead of letting him go on a free transfer in July.

It is thought that Newcastle are closely monitoring the situation with the club, now under the ownership of the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund. The Magpies are having an excellent season under Eddie Howe so far with the club sitting third in the Premier League table going into festive period.
