Frenkie de Jong has been a crucial player for Barcelona ever since he joined from Ajax in 2019. The Netherlands international has featured 190 times so far for the Spanish giants, winning a La Liga title, one Copa del Rey and one Spanish Super Cup. De Jong has two years remaining on his current contract after this season and the club are desperate for him to stay for even longer.
Speaking about the midfielder, Barça sporting director Deco said ‘I See Frenkie de Jong enjoying his life at Barça. He’s happy here, he’s playing top football and he feels very good,’ Deco told Mundo Deportivo. ‘At the end it’s always the player deciding. He’s under contract until 2026 and we want him to stay for a long time.’
Deco has made contact with Frenkie de Jong’s agent, but discussions over a new contract are not yet underway. ‘I’ve texted de Jong’s agents to introduce myself. We haven’t touched on a new deal yet but we want him to stay at Barça for many years. It’s the same for Frenkie, Pedri, Gavi, Araújo, Gündogan. That’s the plan.’
De Jong is currently recovering from an injury which has seen him miss out on this month’s international matches for the Netherlands. Barcelona hope to have him back for the huge clash against Real Madrid on October 28th.
