Barcelona monitoring the progress of Feyenoord midfielder Mats Wieffer

According to Sport, Barcelona are monitoring Feyenoord midfielder Mats Wieffer ‘very closely’ and the club are impressed by the Dutchman’s progress over the last year. Wieffer already meets some key requirements – the 24-year-old is young but already very experienced. He’s got plenty of potential and could be an affordable option for Barça, who are still looking to fill the gap left by the departure of Sergio Busquets.

Mats Wieffer has been a regular starter for Feyenoord ever since he joined the club last year. The defensive midfielder rose through the ranks in FC Twente’s youth academy before making the move to Excelsior Rotterdam in 2020, where he featured 71 times in the Dutch second tier.

Having succeeded with Excelsior, he joined their neighbours, Feyenoord. Wieffer has featured 53 times across all competitions for Feyenoord, helping Arne Slot’s side lift last season’s Eredivisie title. Feyenoord are currently second in the Eredivisie table, whilst in the Champions League they’re maintaining their chances of qualifying for the round of 16.

Barcelona’s current midfield consists of several strong options including Frenkie de Jong, Gavi, Pedri and İlkay Gündoğan. Oriol Romeu joined the club during the summer, but the 32-year-old is seen as a short-term option. If Romeu departs, a spot would open up for Mats Wieffer, who would provide extra competition in the Barça midfield.
