Following their 2-0 defeat to Club Brugge, Athletico Madrid’s Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel was full of praise for the home sides goalkeeper, Simon Mignolet. On Het Niewsblad, Witsel praised Mignolet, stating that “Tonight he showed that he is a top keeper”. Fellow Red Devil Yannick Carrasco was also in admiration of the goalkeepers performance, “I’m happy for Simon Mignolet that he kept so well. A really great match from him. He earns the three points and saved his teams at times“. Carrasco also managed to speak to two other Belgian internationals post match “I congratulated Hans (Vanakan), Dedryck (Boyata) and Simon after the match. But we didn’t talk for long, because their chairman was in the dressing room”.
This was a third consecutive clean sheet in a row for Simon Mignolet, as Club Brugge made it three wins from three with goals from Ferran Jutlga and Kamal Sowah. Carl Hoefken’s side remain in pole position to qualify for the knock-out stages of the Champions League. Prior to the match, Hoefkens had referred to the Spanish side as “Matadors“, but was keen to iterate that his side would not shy away from the challenge.
