Atletico Madrid confirm Memphis Depay faces spell on sidelines

Memphis Depay will not be taking any action for the foreseeable future after suffering an injury while playing for the Dutch national team against Gibraltar, Voetbal International reports.

La Liga club Atletico Madrid have confirmed that the striker will be out of action for a while. According to the Madrid-based club, Memphis has sustained a thigh injury.

The Dutch international had opened the scoring against Gibraltar, but was then forced to be replaced after an hour of play. After further examination, 29, it appears that the injury is more serious than initially thought. At this time, Atletico are unable to provide an estimate of how long the attacker will be out for.

It is certain, however, that Memphis will not be available for the upcoming La Liga match with Real Betis next weekend. This is a major blow for the striker, who has been struggling with his fitness all season.

The former Manchester United player joined Atletico in the summer after being told he had no future at Barcelona from head coach Xavi. Thigh problems has been the regular theme of the season as he struggled for regular minutes and form.

Since his transfer, he has featured just nine times in La Liga matches and scored four times – including a brace against Sevilla earlier this month.
