Atlético Madrid beat Manchester United and Barcelona in race for Antwerp’s highly rated Belgian teenager

HLN are reporting that Atlético Madrid have agreed a deal with Antwerp for highly rated teenager Arthur Vermeeren. The 18-year-old is now set to travel to Spain to discuss personal terms with the Madrid side ahead of a move. Both sides appear to have agreed on a fee in the region of €27m, just a few short of the €30m that Antwerp were looking to get.

Vermeeren has been courting interest from a number of high profile clubs since making his debut last season. Fellow La Liga giants Barcelona have been keeping an eye on him, while Manchester United have also been reportedly interested in signing him. However, only Atlético Madrid have been able to reach an agreement with Antwerp over the transfer.

For the Great Old, the funds will be a welcome addition to the bank balance, as they look to plug a cash flow gap. Vermeeren has made 66 appearances for the club, helping them to their first title since 1957. He has also scored three goals and provided eight assists.
