Arjen Robben’s sons join FC Groningen youth academy

Arjen Robben will be back at FC Groningen a lot next season because his two sons have joined the club’s youth academy. Eleven-year-old Kai Robben and fifteen-year-old Luka Robben are currently playing in the academy at fifth-division side Be Quick 1887, where their father works as a youth coach. From next season Luka will feature in the FC Groningen under-16 squad and Kai in the under-12’s.

The two brothers will be following in their father’s footsteps. Arjen Robben retired from football in 2021 having enjoyed an illustrious career with the likes of Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Real Madrid. Robben’s professional career kicked off with FC Groningen in the 1999/2000 season at the age of just sixteen. He scored 12 goals in 52 appearances before moving on to play for PSV in 2002.

In June 2020 Robben returned to FC Groningen at the age of 36. Injury problems meant he was only able to make seven appearances during his second spell for the club. In 2021 Robben hung up his boots having won the Champions League and eight Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich. Kai and Luka will have to work extremely hard to try and replicate their father’s career.
