Antwerp defender and former Fulham transfer target dreams of playing for Real Madrid but says he ‘needs a little luck’

Antwerp’s Owen Wijndal has revealed that he hopes to play for Real Madrid one day, but, the left-back realises that it’s not a realistic option at this moment in his career.

Speaking to Voetbal International about the aim of playing for Real, Wijndal said ‘A career never runs in a straight line. I went from AZ to Ajax, which is currently going through a very difficult period. I’m still officially a member of the club and I don’t regret taking that step. But to play at a club like Real, you have to master all aspects of football.’

The eleven-time Netherlands international went on to add: ‘The best players in the world are there. I am quite far from that level now, I realise that. But that doesn’t change the fact that I believe that I intrinsically have the qualities to one day achieve it. Only, a little luck is also needed. The matches in the Champions League are crucial in that respect because then the entire football world is watching.’

Wijndal joined Antwerp on loan from Ajax during the summer. The 23-year-old was linked with a move to Fulham last summer before the Belgian outfit secured his services. Last season, Owen Wijndal was limited to just 20 Eredivisie appearances with Ajax last season. So far this season, he’s featured ten times across all competitions for Antwerp.
