Antwerp admin error see’s USMNT defender Sam Vines miss out on Champions League football

As reported by HLN, Antwerp defender Sam Vines is said to be very disappointed after being told that he won’t be part of the European squad for the sides inaugural Champions League campaign. The USMNT defender was meant to be on the European squad list, but an administrative error meant that he was not included while Björn Engels, who has not featured at all since the 2021/2022 season. The former Aston Villa defender joined Antwerp in the summer of 2021 but due to injuries has only made 20 appearances for the club.

Without Vines, the club will be reliant on either Jelle Bataille at left-back, or new signing Owen Wijndal who joined near the end of the transfer window from Ajax on loan.

Antwerp are set to face Barcelona, Shakhtar Donetsk and FC Porto in their first Champions League group in the clubs history. Domestically, the side have won two, drawn two and lost one of their opening five matches.
