Anderlecht priced out of a move for Arsenal’s Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson

LDH are reporting that Anderlecht had wanted to make Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson their replacement for Bart Verbruggen. However, the financials needed to make the move a possibility were too high. While Arsenal were happy to agree to a transfer of the Icelandic goalkeeper to the Belgian capital, Anderlecht had to withdraw as they would not have been able to afford the contract that Rúnarsson would have asked for.

It now appears clear that, even with Verbruggen gone, the side don’t see a future for his back up Hendrik Van Cromrbugge. The more experienced goalkeeper had been the sides number one for a number of seasons before Verbruggen took over between the sticks midway through the 2022/2023 season. The side want to move on from his large contract, which would explain why they were unwilling to commit large amounts to his replacement if it had been Rúnarsson.

The Icelandic Rúnarsson did spend some time in Belgium when he was loaned to OH Leuven during the 2021/2022 season. Last season he was loaned out again, this time with Alanyaspor in Turkey.
