It looked like Mario Stroeykens would be leaving Anderlecht this summer. The players name was linked with many clubs, including newly promoted Leeds United. However, no move materalised and now Stroeykens remained in Brussels. However, his contract is up next summer, and it was anticipated that he would allow it to run down in order to leave for free next summer. However, HLN are reporting that Anderlecht and Stroeykens have engaged in positive talks around a new deal.
Clearly this is early stages, and things may end up not resulting in a new contract. Yet this gives Anderlecht some breathing room and means they will not be forced to sell for a reduced fee in January. Stroeykens, when not injured, has been one of the sides best performing youngsters in recent seasons. During the 2023/2024 season the young midfielder played 40 games, with six assists and six goals. Last sesaon he followed that up with five goals and six assists in 39 games. At just 20-years-old, Stroeykens has plenty of potential and it is no surprise that many clubs in top European leagues are interested in signing him.
Keeping Stroeykens, regardless of the contract, certainly would help Anderlecht in their hopes of finishing in a top six spot and earning a European ticket.
