Anderlecht lost €500k to internet transfer fraud

HLN and others have revealed how Anderlecht lost €500k to internet fraud. The money was transferred back in 2020 by the club to a bank account in Spain, with the fee meant to be for an incoming transfer. It turned out that Anderlecht were not the only ones to fall foul of this, with Portuguese giants Porto also being stung by fraudsters. Both Spanish and Belgian police are investigating the transaction.

Anderlecht have been in a tricky financial situation over the past few seasons, with the side having spent too much on wages and transfers and now needing to balance the books. This was one reason behind the winter sale of Julien Duranville to BVB Dortmund, and why even this summer there may well be further sales of young players who can bring in money.

On the pitch, under head coach Brian Riemer, the side are fighting for a place in the top eight. This would give them a potential shot at European football. They are also through to the quarter-finals of the Conference League, where they will face Dutch side AZ Alkmaar.
