Alfred Schreuder feels Ajax took a step forward against Liverpool

Ajax may have lost 3-0 to Liverpool, but Alfred Schreuder was largely pleased with the team’s performance, saying they took a step forward in their development.

Ajax were knocked out of the Champions League in the group stages after being beaten 3-0 at home to last year’s finalists.

They made a strong start, missing two big chances in the first 45 minutes, before going behind and then falling apart in the second half.

Despite ultimately suffering a heavy defeat though, the Ajax manager was largely pleased with what he saw from his team.

“Liverpool didn’t have a chance, until the 0-1. In the away game we gave away too many spaces, now we could have been leading 2-0. They were more efficient, then you see the class of Liverpool,” he said.

“We are all sports people who want to win. We have done everything we can, but unfortunately it did not work out. We as trainers have to look at the development of the team.

“We have taken a step in that regard, especially in the first forty minutes.”
