Ajax’s €15m summer signing features in second tier match for Jong Ajax

Gastón Ávila was included in the starting line-up for Jong Ajax on Monday evening, ahead of their 4-1 victory over Helmond Sport. The 22-year-old Argentine left-back has lost his starting spot in the first team and is therefore featuring in the second tier. Ávila joined Ajax from Royal Antwerp during the summer in a deal worth at least €12.5m. That amount can increase to €14.5m due to bonuses.

Ávila kicked off his career with 35-time Argentinian champions Boca Juniors, where he featured 12 times for the first team. The versatile defender switched South America for Europe in 2022 and he quickly established himself as a crucial player for Antwerp, helping them to the Belgian title last season.

Since joining Ajax, Gastón Ávila has featured six times across all competitions, starting four of those games. All of those appearances came under the management of Maurice Steijn, who was sacked in October following Ajax’s worst ever start to a season. Ávila will have to wait for an opportunity to play under new head coach John Van ‘t Schip.
