Ajax suffer humiliating 3-0 defeat in friendly clash with German second-tier side just a week before the return of the Eredivisie

The Eredivisie winter break is coming to an end and, after three weeks away from league action, all eighteen sides will return to the pitch next weekend. For Ajax, the last few weeks have been relatively sour. The Dutch giants are still getting over their most embarrassing defeat ever, losing 3-2 to amateur side USV Hercules in the KNVB Cup.

On Saturday, the Amsterdammers suffered yet another defeat, losing 3-0 to Hannover 96 in a friendly match. The German second tier side were dominant against an almost full-strength Ajax side. An early goal from former Sheffield Wednesday defender Julian Börner kicked things off before Havard Nielsen and Mohammed Damar added their names to the scoresheet.

The match was played over two 30-minute halves, but still Ajax couldn’t keep the ball out of their own net. Even with the likes of Gerónimo Rulli in goal, Chuba Akpom and Carlos Forbs up front, Jakov Medic and Gaston Avila in defence… nothing was done to avoid yet another humiliating defeat.

Next weekend, the Amsterdam club come up against Go Ahead Eagles in the Eredivisie. The clash will see fifth-place Ajax come up against the side sixth in the league. Judging by Ajax’s recent performances, they could struggle in this away fixture.
