Ajax starlet considered quitting football amid injury struggle: ‘I was really done with it’

Amourricho van Axel Dongen’s formative career has been plagued by injuries so far. The 20-year-old winger made his debut for Ajax’s first team in December 2021, but due to a serious ankle injury, he’s not been able to truly kick on.

As per VoetbalPrimeur, consistent roadblocks in his career path had Van Axel Dongen driven to despair at times. Speaking on Ziggo Sport’s Kick ‘t Met, the youngster explained:

“Those moments have definitely been there. I also thought: ‘F*ck it, I’m not going to play football anymore’. I was really done with it. I thought I would get injured again anyway. I looked for a lot of solutions to make myself better, to make sure I can play and show the world who I am.”

While Van Axel Dongen thought about giving up, it wasn’t something he shared with Ajax. He continued, “I did not say that to the trainers, but I did say it to my mother. I did say: ‘I can’t do it anymore. I’ll do everything for it. Maybe it’s not meant for me’. Those are moments that I have had together with my mother. But I have it in my head that it just has to happen.”
