Ajax sign Croatian defender Jakov Medić from St. Pauli

Ajax have completed the signing of Jakov Medić from St. Pauli. The Croatian defender has put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the Dutch giants, six days before their Eredivisie campaign kicks off. This new addition gives head coach Maurice Steijn an extra defensive option, after selling Jurriën Timber to Arsenal and Calvin Bassey to Fulham. Ajax have reportedly paid around €3m to bring the right-footed centre-back to Amsterdam.

Jakov Medić featured 29 times in the 2. Bundesliga for St. Pauli last season. The 24-year-old scored four goals in the league and a brace in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. He kicked off his career in Croatia with NK Istra, before experiencing a successful spell with Nurnberg II and SV Wehen Wiesbaden.

There’s a high chance that Ajax will recruit another defender before the transfer window shuts. Voetbal International say that VfB Stuttgart’s Hiroki Ito and Dinamo Zagreb’s Josip Sutalo are top targets for Ajax, but both could be difficult to bring in.
